This definitely works, as I have a few www's set up like this.

I had a very similar problem when I removed a subdomain from Blogger
and tried to add it to my app. I had problems adding the domain (no
error, but also didn't work) for a number of hours after removing it
from Blogger (I presume it took a while to work its way through
Google's network), and also a 404 for a day or so when I finally got
it working.

Have you used the www subdomain on another Google service recently?
