Sorry, I was referring to occasional sporadic errors occurring: they will happen.
I develop mission-critical business applications too, so I completely agree with you. 10 minutes of complete downtime is bad. Having hours of downtime is difficult to deal with, and is really unacceptable. Having weeks of marginal and flaky performance is 100% unacceptable. We have lost customers due to it. However, I have maintained clusters of geographically distributed replicated databases. It sucks really really bad. And when stuff gets out of whack it really bites. Personally I find (in general) App Engine is less stressful, and the platform is quite powerful. But it is not good for my blood pressure when GAE is acting up and I have the feeling of complete and total inability to do anything... it is like watching a train wreck happen. So my solution has been to maintain 'emergency' fail-over servers for the super-critical apps. When GAE starts having really serious problems we fall back to our own servers (check out TyphoonAE). Keeping data up-to-date in the fail-over system is tricky, but in our case it is possible. Not sure about yours.
