If you're worried about his objectivity, it's worth noting that Slicehost performed very poorly - worse than EC2 in most tests. Most likely, he mentions the referral page for Linode and Slicehost because they are the only providers that offer an affiliate program.
In the absence of any reason to doubt his statistics, I'll take them at face value. That said, they're 1.5 years old now. The hybrid part of one of my GAE applications is CPU-intensive, and when/if it hits scale I will be doing a fair amount of this research on my own.
