i don't know of a better place to check on system status. most of the time when i have these sorts of errors it is because i had a spike in traffic, or newer code is finally hit by our users. though sometimes there are slowdowns in the overall system.
can you check on request load to see if you had a spike? any chance that your logs can help see if it was a DB slowdown or if your java instances were performing poorly during that time period?
