If you are using the API, I'm assuming you have EDU or Premium Edition
of Gapps?
If so, you could also consider using mail routes, and setup an
additional route destination (and even re-write the envelope).  This
is "kinda" like forwarding but it happens at a 'deeper' level of the
SMTP process, and you can set it for your whole domain....
