Hi Gunnar,

Google Calendar now supports email and SMS reminders for events, so
maybe there is a way you could incorporate those notifications with
your application.

This functionality has been requested before, so maybe you want to add
it to the API Feature Requests page (http://groups.google.com/group/
google-calendar-help-dataapi/web/api-feature-requests) and we can see
what everyone thinks.
