FWIW this mostly seems to be fixed now. I did find that it still occurs 
if I try and create an event with a Calendar Gadget and the entry 
doesn't have xmlns:gCal="http://schemas.google.com/gCal/2005"; declared.

Whilst it's probably right that it should bail on that I'm not sure a 
404 is the most helpful error message.
