Yes, it's really just that the URL is too large.

As a workaround, you could create a single aggregate events calendar,
and ask students to invite that calendar whenever they schedule an
event. This way there's only one calendar you need to display,
avoiding the URL size restriction.

This is the approach we take behind the scenes with the Google
Developer Events Calendar (though in our case we use the JavaScript
API to automate creation of the event):
