Thank you both for your help. It now seems very obvious and quite simple. I found the wording of the message ambiguous. But perhaps that is because it is trying to apply to a variety of situations. For Google Groups the message should really say: "Add/Invite a new member" instead of "Change your mailing list members to include", which sounds as if you have to change all mailing list members.
