Sorry for the delay replying - just back into work.
I tried the command again (without debugging) and it worked, with a
perfectly reasonable:
warning: You appear to have cloned an empty repository.
(which is, of course, true).
I've also been able to "git push -u origin master" and the files are
clearly there.
Is it just that there is a time lag before the servers "notice" a new
git repository and set it up?
