I partially agree, I don't love the data driven part and will have a stroke sometime worrying about if I sent the correct output/solution, and the challenge phase in TC is great. On the other hand, I really love the small/large format in the new GCJ, it gives a chance to have a different strategy from the SRMs, I liked the GCJ08 way more, where times counted for the small inputs only but the current way is still fun and different from TC. Besides, even when I like the challenge phase, I'm really bad at it, so in the new format I perform better (hardly a nice thing about the format, but a bad thing about myself).
All in all, what I enjoy the most about the new format, is having a different type of competition throughout the year. I love TC, and if there could only be one between TC and GCJ, I would most likely choose TC, but having both formats is much more fun for me. About most people using TC supported languages, that is probably true, I didn't know TC supported python however (have always used C++). But still restricting the languages can't increase the number of participants, no matter if they are a minority, and using the arena isn't so simple for newcomers, those who aren't used to TC may not know about the plug-ins for instance, so there are many factors that could scare non-TC members from a TC hosted GCJ. Of course, the most successful GCJ participants will most likely be TC members, but still I don't think it would increase the number of participants as it would decrease it.
