I would suggest that you do not lift the restriction on non-free
languages. If I ask a student to solve an algorithmic problem on a
homework and he gives me a solution in a language for which I need a
$500 compiler to run, his solution is worthless to me. This is
especially true considering the vast quantity of free compilers in the
world.

Frankly, I find it rude when a person gives me a document or a program
that requires a multi-hundred dollar piece of software to use.
Allowing contestants to use non-free software just encourages bad
habits. Also, none of the other contestants will be able to run the
non-free solutions unless they have an extra few hundred dollars to
spend.
