As others, I think The C Programming
Language<http://www.amazon.com/Programming-Language-2nd-Brian-Kernighan/dp/0131103628>
is
one the best books for C.

On the same line, for C++ I would suggest The C++ Programming
Language<http://www.amazon.com/C-Programming-Language-Special/dp/0201700735>
as
a great resource for understanding the C++ standard.

The "Effective" line are good books too, although you don't need that many
different books, practicing and reading good people's code is a good way to
learn new stuff, you just need one reference so you know what a specific
instruction does, as stated above, www.cppreference.com is good for that.
But, you may be a book person, so here they are.
Effective
C++<http://www.amazon.com/Effective-Specific-Improve-Programs-Designs/dp/0321334876>
Effective
STL<http://www.amazon.com/Effective-STL-Specific-Standard-Template/dp/0201749629>
More Effective
C++<http://www.amazon.com/More-Effective-Improve-Programs-Designs/dp/020163371X>
