I am also not a "programmer".  My line of work takes me more into the data 
analysis side.  I have always been big into problem solving and logic puzzles.  
Programming contests is somewhat of a natural extension of that.  

The goal of things like Topcoder, SPOJ, Codeforces, Code Jam, etc, is to be 
able to break a problem down into methods so that it's simple and solved before 
even writing code.  That's why so many different languages are possible.  The 
key is the problem solving.
