If the call is going into gdata.contacts.service, I think that would mean 
that you're using the older, gdata.contacts.service.ContactsService, instead 
of gdata.contacts.client.ContactsClient to proxy GData communications.

I can't say that switching to ContactsClient in itself will fix your 
problem, but I think it's a step in the right direction. Keep in mind that 
ContactsClient.ChangePhoto() has the same gdata.MediaSource references that 
need to be fixed. For what its worth, I am specifying a content length when 
I call ChangePhoto(), but the workflow of my app lends itself to providing 
that pretty easily.
