Hi Dana, I guess you are talking about the left hand navigation. That's not strictly the same as canvas view; this is the ability to maximize gadgets.
I agree with you that there should still be the option to revert to the current (soon to be former) layout with the tabs at the top. However, I don't really agree with your point about wasted space. With widescreen monitors becoming increasingly common I think it makes sense to make more use of horizontal space. Perhaps it would be a nice idea to be able to collapse the left hand nav?
