It's pretty easy, and in addition to absolute totals, it does allow you to break out numbers by region, week, domain, browser, or just about any other metric. I almost never look at the user counts in the directory anymore. One tip, if you're going to do it put the call to _IG_Analytics in your JS after your gadget is done loading. Otherwise, it can slow down the load, sometimes considerably.
