That's what I'm looking at now too. Over a period, the number of
unique visitors should give a good estimate of how many total people
had it installed during that time.

I have been experimenting with different url's to provide to analytics
also.

For example, I am now trying this for my "market summary" gadget:
1. Create a user pref named "added_on"
2. When the gadget loads, if added_on is blank, get the current date
and populate the user pref with yyyy-mm-dd
3. In the analytics url, I use "/gadgets/marketsummary/[added_on]

Now I can use "drilldown" to see total users at the /gadgets/
marketsummary/ level, but I can also drill down one more level to see
when the users have actually added the gadget for the first time. With
this I should be able to get some idea of how many new people are
adding my gadget each day.

I'm not that familiar with analytics yet, but I'm hoping I can create
a report for "unique visitors that haven't been seen in at least a
week" to get an idea of how many users are removing the app.

I think gadgets development really calls for a customized version of
analytics! A lot of what is in there now doesn't really apply to
gadget authors tracking their use.
