This topic of discussion is still worrisome to us, both at our company
and to the community at large. Inline gadget were the ONLY unique
thing about iGoogle. When the feature was initially scheduled for
deprecation we here at Go Global Gadget LLC decided that the ROI on
iGoogle gadget development wasn't high enough to justify continuing
development on this platform. We had many other ideas for new and
interesting gadgets. Some of the most innovative were inline. Sorry
Dan (Google), your loss.

Anyway. Our conclusion as to which gadgets and why Google is
deprecating inline gadgets are two fold. One: Security. inline
gadgets are a security mess. Malicious web developers could collect
user info and do a lot of things outside the iframe sandbox which
could hurt the user. Two: Don't mess with Google. If your gadget
messes with Google gadgets or the page too much then you'll be shut
down. We analyzed the our inline gadgets that iGoogle decided to shut
off and they basically they had these two perceived qualities to
them. The security we imposed on our gadgets was to encrypt our
javascript intellectual property (which may have been too suspicious
for google) and the other gadgets messed with the page in ways that
iGoogle probably didn't like. All the gadgets which DIDN'T have these
qualities to them made it through the gauntlet of deprecation. This
means that iGoogle is going through BY HAND and checking each inline
gadget for various qualities. That's really underhanded and a slap to
developers' faces. So if your gadget was turned off, it was turned
off for a very specific reason.

This said, i'd like to reiterate that Google's gadgets being inline is
an unfair double standard which most likely won't change.
