Hi Jon,
It's possible to test your theme before it's in the directory as described
at http://code.google.com/intl/en/apis/themes/docs/dev_guide.html#Testing .
Basically you can see it using a url parameter ?skin=<your theme xml url>.

Theme approval can take several weeks. We don't currently have a method for
providing feedback during the approval process. The team is looking at ways
to address this.

Please keep in mind that the iGoogle APIs are in Labs (if you're not
familiar with the Labs program there are some details at
http://code.google.com/labs/ .
