Creating a nongovernmental misinformation-fighting replacement for the
Voice of America

While not ideal, my sense is that the quickest and most economical way
to create a nongovernmental replacement for Voice of America -- in the
process of being dismantled by the current federal administration --
would be to leverage existing Internet resources, at least as a
starting point.

YouTube is an obvious initial choice, since live streams of almost
unlimited size (in a practical sense) can be hosted on the platform
for free, with the potential to reach practically anyone with a
computer or smartphone. YouTube obviously is not the only possible
platform moving forward.

I am not thinking in terms of short audio or video segments. Rather, I
would recommend working initially toward a 24/7 global audio stream --
with archival on-demand segments available -- voiced live (and no AI
of course) with current news, information, and bulletins. The goal
would be to provide a reliable, continuous source for accurate
information to push back on the deluge of misinformation being
generated by the administration and its allies.

To the extent that participants speaking different languages could
participate at different times of the 24 hour clock, all the better.

I am explicitly not supporting any commercial aspects for such a
project, because I feel it would need to be supported initially by
volunteers, perhaps with support donations via Patreon, etc. In
particular, I would prefer to avoid association with any in-stream
advertisers who could ultimately affect programming content, whether
intentionally or not.

These are just first thoughts. Your comments would be most welcome.
Thanks and take care. Best, -L
