App store age gating laws will encourage sideloading

I should add that app store age gating laws such as those enacted (but
not yet in force) in Utah and Texas (which would require ALL users to
provide government credentials that would identity them to prove their
age), will mainly serve to encourage the use of app sideloading with
apps downloaded from unofficial app repository sites, which vary in
their quality and diligence regarding filtering out potential malware,
with everything that implies for privacy and security. Still, given
the massive privacy and security vulnerabilities that could accompany
the laws' own personal data collection requirements for age gating,
these non-official app sites will be attractive alternatives to many
users. -L
