I can't offer any help in this case, but I wouldn't dream of letting some
program, even one as wonderful as Picasa, touch unbackedup originals. In
future you might consider my procedure:

1. Copy the files from the card into a standard subdirectory (mine is
/canon/new) using the standard mount/copy commands.

2. Copy the files from there to a permanent subdirectory (canon.orig/canon.k in
my case -- I like to keep the subdirectories small enough to write to a CD),
assuring that you actually HAVE copied from the card to the HD.

3. Manipulate the files in /canon/new, exporting them into yet another
subdirectory (/new).

4. Dispose of the files in /new as desired.

5. Delete the files in /canon/new.

6. Put the card back in the camera and let the camera erase them.

This isn't really all that much trouble and is pretty conservative. I run a
backup of my entire partition to a different drive/partition whenever I
remember to do it (every week or two, and I have 6 rotating backups including
one to an external 500GB drive). HD space is cheap and I've never lost a photo.

FWIW, the actual Step #1.5 is 'Change the filenames to the form
yyyymmdd--hhmmss based on the exif information'. There's a program called
jhead that will do this for both windows and linux.
http://freshmeat.net/projects/jhead/ This makes it easy to locate any/all
instances of a given photo, the location shows the level of processing -- at
least since your last updatedb/slocate, and it gives you instant information
about when the picture was taken.
