Hi again,

    After doing some more experimentation, I've found that I can,
indeed, get Picasa to recognize captions created by exiv2. For
example:

exiv2 -k -M"set Iptc.Application2.Caption testing yet again" junk.jpg

will add a caption ("testing yet again") to the IPTC data, and it's
visible from within Picasa.

     Part of the problem may be that Picasa has trouble if more than
one item is present in the IPTC data. I've noticed that exiftool and
Image::IPTCInfo add an extra "Iptc.Application2.RecordVersion"
entry, in addition to the "Iptc.Application2.Caption". The following
post
implies that Picasa has a problem with this:

    Also, I'll credit the following post for inspiring me to try exiv2
again:

   Can anybody confirm that Picasa really can't deal with multiple
IPTC tags? I was thinking of adding "Category" tags to my pictures,
so this would be a problem for me.

                                                                 Bryan
