Brian, Sorry i can't post this source code here as it is entangled with the specific business logic i am working on for a client.
I do use just the fromLatLngToPaneCoords function in positionOverlay, reposition all sprites regardless of how the user is panning or zomming around. Performance seemed good enough for me at first but i agree in FireFox it is still quite "choppy", so i may need to optimize this a bit like Marko suggests. Good to hear from Pamela that work is being done to improve the performance of overlays/markers !
