Alright, so I've stumbled on reverse geocoding as a way to determine
the current address from your LatLong. I feel silly for not thinking
of it earlier. Anyway, this should help.
What I'm thinking of now is getting the LatLong around the edges of
the viewport and "snapping" to the ends of the roads there, and then
drawing overlays along the roads from there. That should be possible
for me, but what I'm worried about is branching off from those initial
roads to ones that do not intersect with the viewport edges at all.

Does anyone know if it is possible to jump to the start/end point of a
street just from geocoding/reverse geocoding? I figure GMaps can
geocode street intersections by comparing where the LatLongs of two
streets are the same. But I'm not sure if I can reverse geocode an
intersection of roads from just the LatLong.
