Yes, I understand (after posting and after getting several helpful
responses) that this isn't exactly an API issue, but at the same time,
there's a pool of relatively knowledgeable people here who've paved
the way, provided example code that uses PHP and MySql to connect with
the maps, and perhaps solved similar issues.  I don't really know that
I'd get the same level of understanding if I posted the question on a
PHP users group, and no doubt there'd be plenty of people there to
jump in with a "Why not ask on the Google Maps API forum?"

The bottom line is that I'm posting here because I've received some
extremely helpful responses to various questions.  If you have good
suggestions for alternative places to look for answers to this kind of
question, I'd be more than happy to post questions there.  In the
meantime, I am grateful for the people who've taken their time to
actually help out or make useful suggestions, and I'll hope there's
still some new things I can try to get this to work properly.
