You can either try placing the top layer of G_HYBRID_MAP on top of your 
custom map, or try setting one of the opaque layers to have partial 
opacity.

[Note: don't use partial opacity on a layer that uses partially 
transparent PNGs. MSIE can't handle opacity and PNG transparency at the 
same time.]
