I do not pretend to be an expert on the Google Maps API, but I do know

BTW, I assume your application requires a general, browser-based
solution.  Right?  Otherwise, if your users might be induced to
install Google Earth as the client medium, rendering a KML file of
1,200 points is quite doable.
