Hello smourt,

I had many problems with javascript (still do on many web languages)
and I became very frustrated too. Maybe you've been through it already
but I found W3C tutorials very helpful for a beginner, and I still go
back and review the simplest things:

Seriously you won't regret spending time at W3C.
