The routing engine depends on TeleAtlas data, so I couldn't tell
whether it is the data or the engine itself that causes the route to
take the longer path.
You can correct it by yourself by adding intermediate points.
You could perform a small test, getting an extra directions result
internally, and comparing which ferry yields the shorter route, though
keep in mind that shorter is not necessarily faster.
There may be other factors too, like how often does each ferry sail,
or how well connected to a freeway each ferry is.
