Why not? That's the nature of an API. All the API does is make maps
available and give you the wherewithal to interact with them (for
example, get directions from A to B, draw a line between points A and
B going through points C and D, draw a polygon and fill it, add
markers...)

How you get points A to D, the polygon vertices or the marker location
is up to you.

What you're asking for is another layer on top of the API so you don't
have to do any real programming. There are a number (like GMap-EZ
http://n01se.net/gmapez/ which has its own Google Group), but I don't
know whether they make adding directions easy. GMap-EZ doesn't, by the
look of it.
