Thanks for the smart suggestions, William and Mike. It certainly does
look like the XML-fetching routine is to blame. I changed the URL as
per William's suggestion, but without luck. While I was at it I double-
checked the MIME type under which the XML file was being served, but
everything seems to be in order.

maps.google.com seems to be behaving in odd ways at the moment, too.
In Firefox 3, the My Maps page was generating a JS error even with all
mapplets disabled -- one that I know was not occurring last night. In
Safari the Mapplet Scratch Pad continues to act strangely -- it can't
load the example mapplets properly, and to switch mapplet code I have
to remove the scratch pad completely and then re-add it from the
directory. I'm beginning to wonder if something strange isn't going
on within GMaps' remote-resource-fetching architecture.

I'll be keeping an eye on this list and, as time permits, moving the
station data into the mapplet -- there isn't a particularly good
reason for keeping it in a separate XML file other than ease of
maintenance. Thanks to all who took the time to consider my problem,
and especially to William and Mike. Needless to say I would still be
very glad to hear any additional thoughts that members of this group
might have.
