The only way to be reasonably sure is to add " UK" to the end of the 
text that the user gives you before handing it on to the geocoder. The 
user types "Washington" and you send "Washington UK" to the geocoder.

Using a base country code only applies a modest bias to the results, so 
if there's a much more famous location elsewhere, you can still get that 
one. A query for "California UK" or "Delaware UK" will return the 
locations of little UK villages.

A fairly recent change to the geocode server has made it safe to do that 
without checking.

[In earlier versions you would have had to check that the user hadn't 
already entered "UK", "United Kingdom" or "U.K.", because multiple 
instances of the same thing didn't work.]
