1. True, but conventional wisdom does me no good when I need to be
able to see the roads more prominently than the data I'm overlaying.
Its just a matter of visual priority and clarity.
2. No. I'm only speaking of the png tiles.
3. True, this map is similar to what I have produced. However, as you
can see, the streets and labels become more difficult to distinguish
than they would with the roads overlayed on top of the map.
