I suspect there is no way to obtain the height that the browser WOULD
have made the div IF it weren't constrained by a fixed height and
overflow:hide. It's a bit of an imaginary number.
What you might be able to do is position a similar but unconstrained
div off-screen, put a copy of the directions text into it and let it
grow, and then measure the height.

I've no idea if that helps any towards scrolling a div that you have
made unscrollable.
