If it would be a simple matter of just using charset utf-8, then
please explain why the other charsets exist in first place. I believe
there got to be good reasons, why people use other charsets than
utf-8.

One thing I did not get to work with utf-8 is an alert message with an
umlaut (ü) in it. I tried using alert("ü") and alert
("ü") but no success. I hope that display correctly. Please
have a look at the test pages, just in case.
No issue at all when I use charset iso-8859-1.

Test page with utf-8:
http://www.einberg-volleyball.de/maps/test/utf-8.shtml
Test page with iso-8859-1:
http://www.einberg-volleyball.de/maps/test/iso-8859-1.shtml

Maybe Google can find a solution and display the correct text
depending on the charset that the page is using rather than depending
on everyone using the "right" charset.
