I don't think the problem is the same, though. You're using GGeoXml, and Philip isn't. The GGeoXml object is retrieved from the server, but it looks like v2.139e of the API doesn't include a handler to do anything with it. Nothing in the changelog would appear to be relevant. http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/wiki/JavascriptMapsAPIChangelog Philip's issue is more intractable. It's definitely data-dependent, because it's intermittent, but the data-handling is rather complex. I haven't found what's going wrong yet and whether the data is wrong or highlighting a problem in the API.
