I have the same understanding.

What I am doing in my site is to allow registered (free) users to post
ads. Part of that ad is the location. The user can write down an
address, I convert it into lat/lon and show it on a map, then the user
can modify the mark on the map clicking on it, and finally, I store
the lat/lon. I do not store the address that the user inserted.

I am storing this info in a MySQL database where I am the only
administrator. The info is stored for 6 months and it is always shown
on a Google Map and on Google Earth.

Hopefully all this process is allowed.
