Patrick, like Mike mentions, try gif or png format instead.

Though if you use Map Cruncher for the

image then it will create the right image sizes for each zoom
(256x256px) - Tile Overlays

This will be a faster way to load the files - using the same method of
Google Maps/Virtual Earth.
