As Barry said, you'll have problems with the terms doing it your way. Purchasing a database of zip codes with centroids is relatively inexpensive. For a couple of hundred dollars you would have the complete set, and not have the restrictions that Google places on their data. Search Google for this and I'm sure you'll come up with a couple dozen companies who offer this simple product.
