It's certainly the case that GMap2 was not destroyed in Chrome and
Firefox, but it ceased to be an object in IE6. But then we know that
IE6's handling of Javascript variables is somewhat idiosyncratic. I
should have remembered that I needed to define it as null before the
API assigned a valid value to it. I'll have a look at that at some
point.
