They are _simple_ examples. You should be able to generate the xml (or json) from "an efficient database language like mysql"... If you look at his first example it shows how to solve your problem with the infoWindow. If you look at the custom icon description, it has a working example of a custom icon with an infoWindow (which if understood, would solve your problem). A working example is worth lots of posted code.
