Thank you! . this works! But my shape files are too large. Apparently there are utilities to simplify them. However I need a Linux command line one, and the only one I found, Map Simplification Program, seems to need Postgresql.
I sidetracked with mif2gmap, which only works with API 1.0, but got ogr2ogr working. Now I can convert Shapefiles to many formats! THere may be some distinction between shapes and lines that I don't understand yet, but I need shapes. So, I am wondering what is the most expedient path to take large shapefiles and display filled polygons in the Google MAP API 2.0??
