Rossko, your suspicions are not unfounded !

I believe that if you apply for an OpenSpace API key and display the
OpenSpace PowerdBy logo and copyright text + EULA link then you can
make a Web App that does a JSON full UK postcode lookup without
loading the OpenSpace API software (as can be done with the 1:50K
gazetteer). However ... the service can only be used to pan a map and
NOT for creating routes (and you only get 1000 look ups per 24 hours).

"6 The Postcode Look-Up must only allow the return of mapping tiles in
response to an End User entering a postcode (or part thereof) into the
Web Application. No postcodes (or part thereof) shall be accessed by
or supplied to End Users, nor in any way displayed on or through Your
Web Application (whether in conjunction with a mapping tile or
otherwise), for example, but without limitation, in response to the
End User clicking on a location within the mapping."

Also it seems you can only create a GPS route for personal use
(including on a GPS receiver) not a route to share with others over
the web (this needs clarifying).
