John,

I played with your samples for a bit, and didn't see a large speed
difference (running Google Chrome & Firefox 3), but I did notice a
definite 'blink' when drawing under the newer API, as the titles would
disappear for a fraction of a second before redrawing. This was not
reproduced on the older API.
