Ok, this is resolved.  It's not Firefox either.  It seems to be
Firebug.  Once I suspend Firebug, the page renders fast in Firefox
also.

Btw, the main problem was that the map would *never* render, unless I
did a refresh, not that it was rendering only a little slowly.
