Things stay backwards compatible for a long time, but the API is continually being developed so changes are inevitable. The number of enhancements to the API between 2.50 and the current version (2.160 or thereabouts) is huge. Along the way, some things continue to be supported but are deprecated (so they could disappear) and others like the version 1 map names disappear completely. The sensor parameter is not currently mandatory, but its use is strongly advised and in fact is included in the Terms of Service. Although maps work without it at the moment, at some point that Term will be enforced and you will need to have specified sensor=true or sensor=false depending on whether you are using one or not. You may as well put it in now as you're revising your pages.
