It's just too many for the client browser to handle.
Take a step back, what purpose does it serve the end user to see a
thousand markers at once?
Especially with this dataset, where in fact many markers are piled on
top of each other.

That itself prompts that you may get benefits from a marker clustering
solution - replacing many markers with one that reveals more as you
zoom in.

Client-side clustering won't speed up the five minutes it takes to
download the marker JSON.  A server-side clusterer would benefit that
too.

You might want to re-think the table that appears below the map ;
there's a further long wait while it builds it and fetches 1,000
images.  Most people's attention span isn't that long, and even fewer
people are going to scroll through a 1,000 item list to look at the
pictures ...

The whole page is 11Mb worth, you really need to slim that down !
