The other option is to use tiles.  Check out my elections map:

   1. Go to http://maps.webfoot.com/demos/election2008/
   2. Scroll down to the bottom left, under "Dots Layers"
   3. Select "ZIP codes"
   4. Push the "Refresh Layers" button near the top of the page

There are 32,000 ZIP codes, and as you will note, they refresh quickly.
